BBC – The ‘United 2026’ bid was selected by Fifa member nations, winning 134 votes compared to 65 for Morocco.
The 2026 tournament will be the biggest World Cup ever held – with 48 teams playing 80 matches over 34 days.
“Football is the only victor. We are all united in football,” US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said.
“Thank you so, so much for this incredible honour. Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege.”
The World Cup starts soon
and I don’t even know where it’s being played in Russia. I heard the USMNT didn’t qualify. Without a horse in the race, I’m out. I’ll bet on a few games but even then I’ll probably forget to watch outside of an inadvertent peek at a TV in a bar.
Thankfully for soccer in America, we got some positive news to distract everyone from our absence this year, it could’ve been better though right? Why are we sharing the 2026 World Cup bid with all of North America? The US (or Mexico for that matter) couldn’t have beaten out MOROCCO for the bid without the help from the rest of the continent?
This confuses the shit out of me. Mexico alone is a slightly bigger country by land mass, add the USA and Canada and there will be games played over 2,000 miles apart…with a full country in between. Might as well put Syracuse and UCLA in the same conference.
Tell you what. Keep pool play off of American soil. Let our neighbors to the North and South deal with all the ties. Americans understand that ties make you a bigger loser than losing (take note Goodell, I know you’re reading). We’re the inventors of OT baby.
And I can’t help but love the guy who’s title is literally “US Soccer President” calling soccer “football”. Fifa peer pressure must have gotten to him. Surprised he didn’t pronounce in “futbol” with the soccer accent and everything.
