Upsets, upsets, upsets. Great Saturday of CFB mayhem. Let’s wrap it up and land with our full body weight on it because it’s not a penalty in college.
I went 0-5. YIKES. But ya gotta know the losers to know the winners. Not even gonna go into specifics, I was just wrong.
ALTHOUGH, I picked up the Iowa State money line (+289) against Oklahoma State once I saw that upsets were in the air. All that did was slightly cushion the blow I took from all the other losses.
UPSETS, UPSETS, UPSETS
Syracuse (-4) @ Pittsburgh, FINAL: PITT 44 CUSE 37 (OT)
Not a great look for my Alma Mater. In hindsight, it’s not super surprising. Coming off an emotional loss at Clemson just to go on the road again.
7 Oklahoma (-7) vs 19 Texas, FINAL: TEX 48 OU 45
This was my mortal lock. Now I know to stay away from rivalry games as mortal locks.
Northwestern @ 20 Michigan State (-11), FINAL: NW 29 MSU 19
I run a survivor pool where you pick 3 games a week, can’t pick the same team twice. This game eliminated 3 people. Seemed like a safe pick, until it wasn’t.
Iowa State @ 25 Oklahoma State (-10), FINAL: ISU 48 OSU 42
Iowa State is the number 1 “Bitch Team” in the country. They have one huge upset out of nowhere every year. Last year was beating Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma on the road with their 3rd string QB who played both ways.
5 LSU (-1) @ 22 Florida, FINAL: FL 27 LSU 19
So sad for Coach O. This was a great game. As I had said, Florida’s ranking was severely deflated. Their loss to Kentucky looked awful at the time, now we know Kentucky is legit.
8 Auburn (-3) @ Mississippi State, FINAL: MSU 23 AUB 9
Auburn just isn’t that good.
California (-1) @ Arizona, FINAL: AZ 24 CAL 17
Utah @ 14 Stanford (-4), FINAL: UU 40 STAN 21
I felt super confident taking Stanford. But now I think they’re frauds. Shouldn’t have beat Oregon, got smacked by Notre Dame, then this.
I went 1-3 on big games but 9-4 (6-7 ATS…sheesh) for the rest for a total of 10-7. Look how dumb I was.
Catches of the Year of the Week
Who says Big Ten football is boring?
Also had the fullback play of the week (year?) by a running back
So what did we learn this week?
Florida is very much back in contention.
Hell of a win over the undefeated, top-5 LSU tigers. They made a statement on Saturday and now Georgia’s road to the SEC Championship will not be as easy as we thought. They play the Florida-Georgia Line rivalry at the end of the month, they could both be top-10 teams. Huge playoff implications. The SEC West is boring, Bama is going to roll through to Atlanta. The West? Kentucky, Florida, Georgia all fighting for it.
Texas is back? Like for real this time?
I severely underestimated Sam Ehlinger. Oklahoma just fired Mike Stoops as their defensive coordinator and I think it’s Sam’s fault. His stat line in the biggest game of the year? 24 for 35, 314 yards, 2 TDs with 19 rushes for 72 yards and 3 TDs. His rushing touchdowns were the same play and Oklahoma could not figure it out. I remember watching their loss to Maryland (which I put way too much stock in) and thinking that he was pretty good. He looked great on Saturday, he’s developing nicely. Watch out for Texas in the Big 12.
NC State is quietly undefeated.
No, they haven’t really been tested BUT it’s their best start I think ever. They are going into their bye this week and then travel down to Clemson on October 20th. Clemson has looked very human as of late, the Wolfpack can definitely pull it off. If they do, they will probably find themselves in the ACC Championship game this December.
Notre Dame is going undefeated.
That game in Blacksburg was their last big test of the season. As of now, none of the rest of their opponents are ranked. The toughest games are vs Syracuse in Yankee Stadium, and @ USC on rivalry weekend. The Irish are on a mission…to probably get blown out again by Alabama in the championship.
Also, this was so, so icy cold:
RIP in peace Virginia Tech, I’ll always love the Hokies.
College Gameday rolls into Ann Arbor for 15 Wisconsin @ 12 Michigan. I strongly disagree with the decision with 2 Georgia playing at 13 LSU. Someone hire me as a producer/director of these college football shows. Anyway, here’s the slate:
Michigan State @ 8 Penn State
Minnesota @ 3 Ohio State
7 Washington @ 17 Oregon
22 Texas A&M @ South Carolina
2 Georgia @ 13 LSU
Baylor @ 9 Texas
15 Wisconsin @ 12 Michigan
19 Colorado @ USC
Just clearing the air.
